PS3 Doesn't Read Optical Media There are two models of Blu-ray drives for the fat models of PlayStation 3, each with parts specific to their own model. The easiest way to tell which kind of drive is in your PlayStation 3 is to take the drive out and look at it.
If the drive has an exposed control board on the bottom of the Blu-ray drive, the Blu-ray drive's model number is KEM-400. If there is no exposed control board, then the Blu-ray drive's model number is KEM-410. If your PlayStation 3 is not reading discs, or is reading discs inconsistently, then follow this flow chart to fully diagnose the problems with your Blu-Ray Drive. Insert a disk into the PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Drive. Q1.
Does the PlayStation accept the disk?. Yes - Go to 'Step 2'. No - Go to 'Q2'.
Q2. Is the Blu-Ray Drive Blocked?- There is a physical barrier preventing your PS3 from drawing in disks. Yes - Go to 'SOLUTION: Gear Alignment Reset'.
No - Go to 'Q3'. Q3. Does the disk eventually get drawn into the console? - You push the disk in 3/4 of the the way, and the mechanism draws the disk into the console.
Yes - Go to 'SOLUTION: Broken sensor board.' . No - Go to 'SOLUTION: Faulty Control Board' Step 2.
Clean the Disk - Using a cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth, clean the disc. Does the PlayStation read both Blu-ray disks and DVDs?. Yes - Go to 'SOLUTION: Your done!. No, it reads one media type, but not the other - Go to 'Step 5'. No - Go to 'Step 3' Step 3. Eject the disk.
Q5. Did the disk come out in the same orientation that it was inserted?. Yes - Go to 'Step 5'.
No - Go to 'Step 4' Step 4. Re-insert the disk into the PlayStation 3. Q6. Is the loading wheel present on the XMB?. Yes - Go to 'Step 5'. No - Go to 'SOLUTION: Faulty Control Board' Step 5.
Clean the Lens. Q7. Does the PlayStation read both Blu-ray disks and DVDs?. Yes - Go to 'SOLUTION: You're done!. No, it reads one media type, but not the other - Go to 'SOLUTION: Faulty Lens'. No - Go to 'Step 6' Step 6.
Eject the disk. Q8. Did the disk come out in the same orientation that it was inserted?.
Yes - Go to 'SOLUTION: Faulty Lens'. No - Go to 'Step 7' Step 7. Re-insert the disk into the PlayStation 3.
Q9. Is the loading wheel present on the XMB?. Yes - Go to 'SOLUTION: Faulty Lens'. No - Go to 'SOLUTION: Faulty Control Board' Solution: Gear Alignment Reset Realigning the gears in the blu-ray drive is fairly simple. Depending on the type of Blu-ray drive you have, you will need to either follow this guide or this guide. Solution: Broken Sensor Board Only the KEM-400 optical drives have IR sensors for discerning when discs are inserted into the Blu-ray drive.
If your IR Sensor is no longer working, you can attempt to replace it, however, it will in no way affect the performance of your Blu-ray drive. Solution: Faulty Control Board If you have judged that the Control Board is no longer functioning properly, then you will likely need to send your PlayStation to Sony. The Control Board is paired to the Motherboard and will only work with its original partner board. Solution: You're done! If everything is working great, then you no longer need this troubleshooting guide.
Solution: Faulty Lens Being a very fragile piece of technology, it is easy for the lens to break. Both types of Blu-ray drives have a specific lens that will only work with that type of drive. Depending on which type of drive you have, follow this guide (KEM-400) or this guide (KEM-410)d to replace the laser. I have a ps3 that turns on for a minute than off just before it starts the display on the screen.
I have opened the playstation and replaced the power supply unit with a new one and I get the same problem. I also know of the two adjustment screws inside the power unit. Since I have replaced the power unit and have the same problem I disassembled the original unit and tried adjusting the screws. I have been unsuccessful with trial and error. So to reiterate I have a playstation 3 that turns on and starts operation but dies just before it displays the startup screen.
I have replaced the power supply unit with a new one and have adjusted the adjustment screws on the old unit and still get the same problem with either unit. Any other ideas??
Hey everyone, I have a cech 2003a and just replaced the lens with a brand new one and it is still not spinning it try to read the disk but on the main screen shows that is still reading it even though I have replaced the lens, the disk goea in and the realines itself and it still do not spin iv email sony and they said send it to them when I don't have the cash to do that what else could it he iv gone through everything and have no idea what it could be, Please can someone help iv been trying since the 1st of April to get it to work. After upgrading my ps3 to firmware 4.55 my ps3 stopped reading discs. I tried calling sony support but they of course denied that it was the firmware update and told me there would be a hundred dollar service charge. There are a number people having these issues on forums but I haven't read anywhere of Sony making any statement or addressing the topic.
Ps3 Software Update Problems
So now myself as well as many others are stuck having to pay for something Sony potentially and probably broke. I tried sending this information to ign through but i keep getting a 404 error from the site. Anyone experiencing any problems or know how to get this information to ign? I posted some threads below as examples on some of the issues. Necrobump - GTPorsche. Sorry OP, but there ain't much to suggest any of that is the result of the update.
It could all be coincidental. This happens every time an update is released. Seriously, Google any previous update. There's always someone blaming it for something. Look at those threads.won't read discs, can't sign in, HDMI issues, black screen.
None of them are more than a handful of posts long, and they all have wildly different errors. One of them is using the oldest PS3 model.
There's 80 million PS3s out there. If there was issue, it would be much more obvious. You wouldn't have a handful of people each complaining about drastically different issues. It's highly unlikely that a firmware update caused all those different problems. Odds are it is nothing more than a coincidence. Hell, even if you look back through the pages on the PS3 support forum, there isn't a difference in the amount of reported problems per day, with each day's worth of new threads taking up only about a page worth of topics.
It didn't spike after 4.55 was released. If there was some big problem, there would have been a spike. IGN isn't going to care, because they'll agree with what was said by the PS reps in that support chat you linked to. The update was fine. Click to expand.Every update? Exaggerate much.
Ps3 Update Problems
You mean one. There is underlying issues for the others that reinstalling the firmware happens to bring out. It's not the update itself that causes problems. One actually did trace back to the update being the issue.and they pulled the update and fixed it rather quickly.
Luckily that one was pulled before mine auto updated. I'm not going to lie, I just set mine to update and left the house about 30 minutes before this thread was made. Got a little nervous after seeing this but mine reads discs and stays signed in. Everything seems fine.knocking on wood. Sorry OP, but there ain't much to suggest any of that is the result of the update. It could all be coincidental.

The update was fine. Click to expand. MrBeatdown, For the most part I couldn't agree more with you. If I was scrolling through threads and saw this I'd come to the same conclusion.
Especially with the number of different issues from one update. Is the update causing all of these issues? Probably not but I'm not one of the programmers and the update is being listed as one of those improves stability updates so there's no way for me to really know what was changed and how it effects different ps3 models/firmwares/etc. I just posted the other issues because they still may or may not be relevant to the update. My issue specifically is with the system not reading discs which is being experienced by a small number of people admittedly but they are there. Of course there's a chance that all of our drives somehow went bad around this time after all like you said there are millions of ps3s. My personal experience is one day having a working disc reading ps3 then a few days later turning it on, updating it, and when I go to to click the dead space 3 icon to start the game I get an error message with some number then games icons refuse to show up at all now.
So I have to ask myself did my ps3 blu ray drive decide to shit all over itself and it just happened to happen at the sametime as the update or is there potential that the update caused some kind of an error that is affecting a small amount of people. The thing is both of these things are unlikely with the update option being more unlikely since my console is an older phat but reading this article: and the article within it along the other people claiming to have the same problem after the update though it is a small number of people sway me to think that the update maybe causing the issues with the blu ray drive in a small number of consoles.
The article states that someone called and was told the update had to do with blu ray and dvd checks. Is this true maybe or maybe not I cant imagine why anyone would lie about that but I wasnt there so idk but it definitely adds to my skepticism. The whole point of informing ign of potential problems isnt to assume that they'll do something about it. Its not like I think ign is going to go beat up sony or anything but if enough people have similar issues or issues period and it somehow becomes known there's potential for it to be fixed. I just have to hope that the small number of people with this issue is at least large enough to question. Sorry OP, but there ain't much to suggest any of that is the result of the update.

Still, none of that really suggests anything beyond a coincidence for a handful of people out of the millions and millions that downloaded that update.
I had a 60GB model. It's Blu-Ray drive died mid-game back in 2010. I was playing Split/Second.
Textures stopped loading. I even won the race and a trophy popped up, but nothing happened after that. I restarted my PS3 and no disc icons would show up at all. It died, just like that. Sounds like the same thing happened to you. After the update, the drive was able to read the disc to say it was Dead Space 3. It had to function on some level following the update for you to even try to start it and get the error in the first place.
So the update didn't outright disable it. It's really just two possibilities. Your old PS3 has a relatively common problem, at least when it comes to hardware issues, coincidentally after an update that may have been Blu-Ray related. Or you're in an extraordinarily tiny group of PS3 owners that had a minor firmware update completely stop the Blu-Ray drive from functioning at all, only after you tried starting a game. It sucks, and I feel for you, but Sony's stance on it is entirely reasonable since there is so little reason for them to think there's anything wrong with their firmware.
For every person you can find that thinks there's an issue, Sony's got a million that downloaded it without issue. If I were you I'd do what I did. I sold it on Craigslist (I was lucky and got $170), and put it towards a new system with a full warranty, new controller, and bigger drive. It might cost you more, but a refurb is a refurb. My 60GB PS3 got the YLOD and I had it replaced with a refurbished one. That one stopped playing Blu-Ray a year later. To the OP and anyone who cares: I bought my ps3 2 months ago.
My ps3 isn't old or nothing of the sorts. And these are my first post here because I'm new to the ps3 and this IS my first problem.
My ps3 reads DVD's and CD's but dosen't read any game disc I put in. Can't say for sure it dosen't read blurays' as I have no bluray movie to try, but the 2 games I have and neither comes up in the game menu when I put them in. All this happened after I updated to 4.55. Is it a coincidence, MAYBE. But seeing that some other people have this SAME problem around the SAME time, gets me and the rest of us who just got or ps3s' brick'd to think it MIGHT have something to do with the new update.
Of course if your ps3 works you probly give 2 sh.ts about the rest of us, but think about if it had happened to you, wouldn't you want support for the community not blame. Some of you guys just say its our fault. How the heck is this my fault? I didn't stick my finger in the bluray reader or nothing. I just turn'd my ps3 on with the game inside and the ps3 just spins it a few times and stops, never spinning up sufficiently to read it or whatever. I'm am lucky enough to still have the warrenty on it and will get it exchanged the next working day I can.
But why should I have to waste my guarantee on this when I didnt even break it? But I know the haters are gonna start saying crap but I could care less. OP, I'm with you on this. My ps3 is new and same thing happened. Hope they get this fixeed for us who have this problem.

IMO if the sh.t broke after I updated. Sorry OP, but there ain't much to suggest any of that is the result of the update. It could all be coincidental. This happens every time an update is released.

IGN isn't going to care, because they'll agree with what was said by the PS reps in that support chat you linked to. The update was fine. Click to expand.Well, you'd be wrong. Do you even know what firmware does? It basically changes how your hardware thinks. It's something between software and hardware is the best way to describe it. And yes, a bad firmware update will brick your console like it will on any device you update firmware on.
Sony isn't known for their quality control with firmware updates. Just their past one caused HDDs over 500GBs to see the boot ribbon forever.
Sony pulled the update shortly after they went live. They had to release a second update later to try and fix that.
What I find funny about Sony firmware updates is it should be easy for them to make a good update considering they have a standard for all their hardware and very limited configurations. I've seen better firmware updates on a regular PC machine that could have endless variations of their configuration. How do you think they feel when they test their firmware updates for quality purposes? So yea, anyone who's questioning people about these updates need to do their research on past Sony firmware problems. Software(not games) will always be the bane of Sony as it's the weakest aspect of all their products. Don't get me started on my Sony Bravia's UI and their shitty firmware updates.
Sorry OP, but there ain't much to suggest any of that is the result of the update. It could all be coincidental.

So yea, anyone who's questioning people about these updates need to do their research on past Sony firmware problems. Click to expand. Did you just skip over what I said before that? I'm not stupid. I know what firmware is. I never said bad firmware couldn't cause problems. I said I doubt updates to firmware will produce so many wildly different problems, and only affect a couple of people.
Sure, if there's an actual increase in people reporting those problems, that points to firmware issues. But a couple people posting random issues that don't amount to any more than the complaints seen every other day?
In the case of 4.45, it was a pretty specific problem, and Sony acknowledged it. It was immediately obvious there was a problem. One guy didn't report that he couldn't sign in, then another reported his HDMI didn't work. Numerous people all reported the same specific and unusual problem, and it was quick. It didn't take days for the reports of issues to pile up. Of course Sony is going to get a bad reputation if after literally every update, somebody blames Sony because their PS3 died, and everyone just assumes it is true. I'm not saying Sony's updates are perfect.
But I'm saying, if you've got a bunch of wildly different problems, all of which have other possible explanations, and no spike in reported issues on the Sony support forums to suggest the problem is anything beyond the normal amount of complaints about defective hardware, odds are it's not a problem with the firmware. It's just a coincidence.
Look at this thread. It's one of the top results for any Google search with 'ps3' and '4.55' in it. But there's only three or four people in this thread reporting issues, all of which obviously found this thread via a search. That's out of millions and millions who downloaded that update. If that's grounds to say there is a problem with the firmware, what isn't? To the OP and anyone who cares: I bought my ps3 2 months ago. My ps3 isn't old or nothing of the sorts.

My ps3 is new and same thing happened. Hope they get this fixeed for us who have this problem.
IMO if the sh.t broke after I updated. So I guess your saying all us saying that the 4.55 broke something in our ps3's are stupid? Maybe after a week i'll be back here, maybe not. But i thought i found a thread that was to help my situation not get but-f.ck'd and laughed.
I hope if your system ever gets bricked after a update, you have no money to get a new one and you can feel what we feel. I'm not here to bash sony or anyone for that matter. I was looking for help but since the f.kin new guy like me dont desrve it. Well then like i said, hope your ps3 bricks too and you wont laugh at us anymore. Hope sony fixs this.
Click to expand. So if they change my ps3 for a new one, I get a new warranty for another year or just for the remaining time of the original warranty? That was my problem. I thought I'd have to use up my warranty on this issue and have no safety net after. Who's to say the next firmware does do the same thing to me.
But seems like i keep the warranty so guess i'll just turn it in. Thanks for that info as I didnt know that. PS guy: I'm not here to bash sony or anyone, just trying to get my new ps3 working again. Guess it just happened to break after updating it being 2 months old.

Guess I got a faulty ps3. Like a few others/quote. While my PS3 got the upgrade i checked it with a disc and it is fine. But I believe that these other units might have gotten messed up. I don't think the exact firmware is to blame it is probably a combination of things.
Either they had a bad drive already, and/or the firmware didn't download properly and it bricked the system during install. Because this is low level software writing, it's highly likely that it could do something like this. The only thing you can try and do is install an older firmware ( not sure if that is possible ) or redownload it through a PC and boot into safe mode and try and install the firmware again. Other than that you will probably have to get our PS3 fixed. So I guess your saying all us saying that the 4.55 broke something in our ps3's are stupid? Maybe after a week i'll be back here, maybe not.

Seems a lot of stuff has gone wrong. Anyways, I had a similar problem, but in my case there were no problems initially. After switching accounts and game, I got this message 'The system software cannot be run correctly. Artcam pro 2015 torrent download. Press the PS button to try to restart the system If the system cannot be restarted, you must reinstall the system software Connect storage media that contains update data of version 4.55 or later, and then press the start and select buttons at the same time. For information on how to obtain update data, refer tot the SCE web site for your region.'
Switched the account and game back, and it worked. Switched back to the faulty account, and now it works. So now, it's back to normal. Good lucking to (the likely few) others that haven't tried this.
